Andreas Hansen Hjort

1/11-1752 - 6/11-1834​

ESTABLISHED AS VIOLINMAKER IN COPENHAGEN 1789. VIOLINMAKER TO THE ROYAL COURT.

HE MADE A LARGE NUMBER OF VIOLINS AND SOME CELLI, WHICH HE, BESIDE HIS LABEL, OFTEN BRANDED AHH. HIS INSTRUMENTS SHOW CLEAR SIGNS OF INFLUENCE FROM SOUTH GERMANY. THE VARNISHES VARY FROM NICE REDDISH/BROWN SPIRIT VARNISHES TO ALMOST GREYISH/BROWN SEMI-TRANSPARENT VARNISHES. 

ANDREAS CHRISTIAN HJORTH

1804 - EFTER 1845​​

SON OF ANDREAS HANSEN HJORTH. KNOWN AS VIOLINMAKER IN COPENHAGEN 1834/1845. WORKED IN HIS FATHERS STYLE. VERY LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT HIM.

JOHANNES HJORTH

6/9-1809 – 19/12-1900​​

SON OF ANDREAS HANSEN HJORTH. TRAINED BY HIS FATHER. TOOK OVER HIS FATHERS FIRM IN 1834. MADE ONLY A SMALL NUMBER OF INSTRUMENTS AND WAS MAINLY KNOWN FOR REPAIRING INSTRUMENTS.

EMIL HJORTH

9/2-1840 – 7/1-1920​

SON OF JOHANNES HJORTH. INITIALLY TRAINED BY HIS FATHER. HE WENT TO VIENNA TO WORK WITH GABRIEL LEMBÖCK 1863-64 AND TO PARIS 1864-65 TO WORK WITH BERNARDEL PÈRE, WHERE HE CAME UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE FRENCH SCHOOL.

HE TOOK OVER HIS FATHERS FIRM IN 1870. PARTICIPATED WITH HIS INSTRUMENTS IN SEVERAL EXHIBITIONS. MANY
INSTRUMENTS WAS BUILT AFTER STRADIVARI AND GUARNERI MODELS. THE VARNISH IS OFTEN OILVARNISH IN REDDISH/BROWN. ESPECIALLY HIS CELLI IS OF A VERY HIGH QUALITY. ​

​OTTO HJORTH

22/11-1877 – 29/11-1950​​

SON OF EMIL HJORTH. STARTED IN HIS FATHERS FIRM 1892. HE WENT TO PARIS AND WORKED WITH GEORGE CUNAULT 1900-1902.

​KNUD HJORTH

18/12-1880 – 31/1- 1952​​

SON OF EMIL HJORTH. STARTED IN HIS FATHERS FIRM 1896. WENT TO BERLIN, WHERE HE WORKED WITH ERNEST KESSLER 1904-1905.

​EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER

THE BROTHERS OTTO AND KNUD HJORTH TOOK OVER THE FAMILY-FIRM IN 1906, WHEN THEIR FATHER RETIRED. 

FROM 1905-1950 THEY MADE APPROXIMATELY 475 VIOLIN, VIOLAS AND CELLI. NO 100 WAS MADE IN 1913, NO 200 IN 1921, NO 300 IN 1931 AND NO 400 IN 1940.

THE INSTRUMENTS ARE DISTINCTLY FRENCH IN CHARACTER, MAINLY BASED ON STRADIVARI MODELS AND WITH A RED OR REDBROWN, COMPLETELY TRANSPARENT OIL-BASED VARNISH. FROM 1930 A NUMBER OF INSTRUMENTS WERE BUILD OVER MODELS OF VARIOUS OLD ITALIAN MASTERS. OTTO AND KNUD HJORTHS INSTRUMENTS ARE SIGNED "EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER, KØBENHAVN, ANNO (YEAR)". THE LABEL ALSO HAS A HANDWRITTEN SIGNATURE "O. OG K. HJORTH" AND A REGISTRATION NUMBER. THE INSTRUMENTS ARE BRANDED EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER IN SEVERAL PLACES INSIDE. WORKSHOP INSTRUMENTS ARE SIGNED "UNDER LEDELSE EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER" (UNDER GUIDANCE EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER)

THE BROTHERS HAD A VERY INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK AND WAS CONSEQUENTLY IN 1950 AMONG THE FOUNDERS OF ENTENTE INTERNATIONALE DES MAITRES LUTHIERS ET ARCHETIERS D`ART (EILA).

​ARNE HJORTH

20/4-1910 – 20/3- 2001​​

SON AF KNUD HJORTH. TRAINED IN EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER FROM 1926. WENT TO PARIS 1934-35, WHERE HE WORKED FOR CHARLES ENEL. 1939 HE BECAME PARTNER IN EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER, WHICH HE TOOK OVER IN 1952.

HIS INSTRUMENTS FOLLOW THE FRENCH TRADITION AND ARE SIGNED, LIKE HIS FATHER`S AND UNCLE`S, "EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER, KØBENHAVN ANNO (YEAR)" AND A HANDWRITTEN SIGNATURE "ARNE HJORTH". FOR VIOLINS OF HIS OWN MODEL, HE HAS ALSO USED HIS OWN LABEL ARNE HJORTH WITH A DRAWING OF A STAG.

ARNE HJORTH PUBLISHED IN 1963 THE BOOK "DANISH VIOLINS AND THEIR MAKERS". FROM 1950 HE WAS FOUNDERMEMBER OF ENTENTE INTERNATIONALE DES MAITRES LUTHIERS ET ARCHETIERS D`ART. RETIRED FROM EMIL HJORTH & SØNNER 1985.

​MADS HJORTH

4/8-1947 –​​

SON OF ARNE HJORTH. TRAINED IN EMIL HJORTH & SONS 1964-66. WENT 1966-1968 TO MIRECOURT, FRANCE, AS APPRENTICE IN THE FIRM PAUL HILAIRE UNDER THE TUTELAGE OF JEAN EULRY AND 1968-1969 TO PARIS, WHERE HE WORKED WITH ETIENNE VATELOT. BUILT A NUMBER OF VIOLINS, VIOLAS AND CELLI DURING THE YEARS IN FRANCE.

HE HAS WORKED IN THE FAMILYFIRM SINCE 1970, AS PARTNER FROM 1972 AND AS SOLE OWNER FROM 1985.
SINCE HIS RETURN TO DENMARK THE INTEREST HAS BEEN MAINLY BEEN RESTORATION AND DEALING IN OLD MASTER-INSTRUMENTS.

MADS HJORTH IS MEMBER OF THE ENTENTE INTERNATIONALE DES MAITRES LUTHIERS ET ARCHETIERS D`ART, WAS FOR MANY YEARS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE MUSICHISTORICAL MUSEUM, COPENHAGEN, AND IS FOUNDERMEMBER OF THE DANISH VIOLINMAKERS GUILD.
